Water Tank Inspections

A pre-maintenance evaluation using a ROV allows for complete analysis of the exterior and the interior water chamber surfaces without affecting the service status of the tank. For this reason, an ROV inspection is recommended for most routine pre-maintenance evaluations, as it provides the most cost-effective assessment of an in-service tank.

All equipment used in a ROV inspection is for use in potable water applications only and shall be disinfected with 200ppm chlorine solution in accordance with AWWA C652 Method 2 prior to use in the tank. The ROV will inspect throughout the submerged tank surfaces including all shell elevations, floor, riser, and all accessible appurtenances. The ROV will also be used to evaluate the underside of the tank roof from the water surface.

BENEFITS

  • Close-up visual inspection of all shell surfaces below water level without additional rigging.
  • Tank can remain online and in-service with no loss of water capacity.
  • No secondary disinfection required following completion of the evaluation.
  • Unlimited underwater inspection time.
  • Reduced costs and risks when compared to a certified diver inspection.

DISADVANTAGES

  • Only limited instrumentation is available to assess the inner water chamber.
  • Silt along floors and water turbidity may impede inspection.
  • Additional evaluation costs compared to a drained or rooftop inspection.
